Hemorrhoids: Why “miracle cures” from the internet are often a dead end

Fragwürdige Präparate

“Symptom-free in 3 days!”, “The secret formula for hemorrhoids,” or “Finally pain-free without a doctor”—anyone looking for help with anal discomfort is bombarded with promises online. Sensational ads tout dietary supplements and ointments as if they were the next big thing. But what’s really behind these products? And why can clicking the “Buy” button never replace a visit to the proctologist?

It often starts with a discreet itch, a burning sensation, or bright red traces of blood on the toilet paper. Since the topic is still considered embarrassing for many, the first step usually isn’t a trip to the doctor’s office, but a search engine. There, savvy marketers are already waiting with “major product reviews” and “exclusive guides.”

The scam of hope: Why fake remedies are booming

Many of these online-advertised remedies exploit a psychological trap: They promise a quick, discreet cure without the supposed “embarrassment” of an examination.

What stands out:

  • Vague claims of effectiveness: These are often simple dietary supplements (vitamins or fiber) that, while they may generally support digestion, are completely ineffective against already enlarged hemorrhoids (Grade 2 to 4).
  • Exorbitant prices: For standard ingredients that can be purchased at any drugstore for a few euros, “special formulas” often command exorbitant prices.
  • Lack of medical evidence: While approved medications must undergo rigorous clinical trials, these products often operate in a gray area. They may temporarily relieve symptoms (through cooling or lubrication), but they do not address the root cause of the problem.

The risk of self-diagnosis

The biggest problem isn’t even the wasted money—it’s the time that slips away. Anyone who relies on dubious internet products is self-diagnosing. But what feels like “hemorrhoids” may actually be something entirely different:

  • Anal fissures: Painful tears in the mucous membrane that require a completely different treatment.
  • Anal thrombosis: Acute, painful blood clots at the edge of the anus.
  • Anal eczema: Skin irritations that are often caused by using too much (or the wrong) ointment or wet wipes.
  • Worst-case scenario: In the worst case, bleeding can also be a sign of malignant changes (colon cancer).

An online guide cannot palpate, cannot use a speculum, and cannot provide certainty. It merely sells a product that is often of questionable quality, which in the worst case can cause unpredictable side effects or is incompatible with other medications.

Why a visit to a proctologist is essential

A specialist in proctology takes a holistic approach to the problem. In our practice, the goal is not to operate immediately—quite the opposite. Modern proctology is largely pain-free and offers stage-appropriate solutions:

  • Precise diagnosis: Through a brief, painless examination, we determine the severity of the hemorrhoidal condition (Stage I to IV).
  • Targeted therapy: Instead of expensive “miracle cures,” we prescribe medically effective medications that inhibit inflammation or provide local anesthesia.
  • Minimally invasive procedures: If necessary, hemorrhoids can be treated in just a few minutes and with almost no pain through sclerotherapy or rubber band ligation—right in the office.
  • Root Cause Analysis: We’ll discuss your diet and lifestyle habits to help prevent your symptoms from returning permanently. After all, a healthy diet can make a big difference even for “mild” hemorrhoids. We are not fans of strict diets at our practice, but we always emphasize that it is important to chew your food slowly (32 times per bite) and to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day between meals (!).

Trust your specialist, not an algorithm!
